I have been mentally collecting dumb things to say in the business world. The following have been said to a potential employer. Really. If you passed them on the street, or new them as your friends, you'd never expect them to be dumb enough to say this during an interview. But they really did. All these quotes come from a reliable enough source that I believe they really happened.
- "I would rather gouge my eyes out than do market research."
-potential business collaborator whose job description would include market research. - "I like the business, but the only thing that I don't like is YOU! You are not a likeable person."
-potential sales person, who evidently hadn't heard about burning bridges. - "I will never work with you again in the future."
-Director of Photography, who also hadn't heard about burning bridges. - "The script is trash. Throw it out and start over."
-potential busness collaborator, who thinks he is an editor a la J. Jonah Jameson. However, Mr. Jameson never had a script writer for a potential boss. - "I was a business major for 3 years, but then I realized I didn't really like business, so I went into military intelligence.
After 3 years of that, I realized I didn't like that job either, so I decided to go back to business."
-potential business collaborator, who believes in honesty.
